Crank Radio Models

There are many different models of crank and windup radios produced by a number of different companies. The original was the Freeplay radio produced by Baygen and designed by Trevor Baylis.

Freeplay Radios

Freeplay is the brand name for all of Trevor Baylis’s models.

 

 

Freeplay Original

The original freeplay radio provided an hour’s worth of radio listening for a minutes winding.

 

 

Freeplay Plus

The Freeplay plus radio produced by baygen was basically the same as the original freeplay radio but also included a torch and slightly longer running times.

 

 

Freeplay Eyemax LED

The Freeplay Eyemax LED features an emergency LED light at the base of the radio. It also includes a rechargeable battery. A 30 second wind provides enough power for 35 minutes of radio listening pleasure. If the battery is fully charged then this lasts 25 hours. The eyemax is considered as the most fashionable looking model yet. It’s also available in various colors.

 

 

Freeplay Companion

Freeplay companion is one of the latest models produced by baygen. This torch includes a battery which can be charged through a mini-usb connector.

 

The torch can also be used to charge your nokia mobile phone as long as it uses the older style nokia charger connector.

There are also lots of different brands of crank radios which provide similar functionality to the freeway models.

 

Roberts Wanderer

The Roberts wanderer features a rechargeable battery, and a built in torch. The radio is also water resistant and features a headphone socket.

 

 

Steepletone DTR4M

The Steepletone DTR4M features an LED torch and radio. The unit is powered by a battery which can be recharged by turning a handle.

 

Winding the radio for 1 minute will provide 15 minutes of radio listening. This radio also features a variety of mobile phone connectors to charge your phone.

 

ETON FR140

This radio features a rechargeable battery which can be charged by the built in solar panels or by winding the handle to charge the battery. The battery can also be charged by plugging it into a mini-usb style charger.

 

The radio also features a flashlight and cell phone connectors to charge your mobile phone.
